Department of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Aircraft Propulsion

Designing propulsion systems of the future

Established in 2008, the Department of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Aircraft Propulsion is a modern centre for research and implementation in the fields of aviation, propulsion systems and aerodynamics. We combine advanced numerical modelling, experimental research and practical industrial implementations.

  • Thermodynamics
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft propulsion
  • CFD
  • Control systems

Areas of specialisation

We specialise in designing modern propulsion systems and aerodynamic solutions for the aviation and automotive industries.

  • aircraft internal combustion engines
  • aircraft design and systems
  • engine control systems
  • alternative fuel supply systems
  • vehicle electrical power systems
  • aerodynamic solutions for machines and technical structures

wind tunnel testing

From simulation to wind tunnel

Our research covers the full spectrum of thermodynamic and flow-related phenomena.

  • CFD modelling
  • wind tunnel testing
  • simulation of flow, heat and mass transfer processes
  • combustion process simulations
  • advanced engineering tools: Ansys, AVL

We design and analyse

  • internal combustion engine supply systems
  • alternative propulsion systems for stationary, automotive and aviation applications
  • flow propulsion systems
  • electronic control systems

Experimental research includes piston internal combustion engines, fuel systems and modern electronic control systems for propulsion units.

Technologies that reached the market

The department not only conducts research – it actively contributes to industrial development in Poland and abroad. Our solutions have been commercially implemented and recognised internationally.

Key achievements

  • the world's first EASA-certified electronic fuel injection system for a high-power aircraft engine
  • a photovoltaic panel system mounted on bus roofs operating in Poland and abroad
  • electronic gas injection system for spark-ignition automotive engines – over 50,000 implemented units
  • electronic diagnostic tester for Polish cars – 250 devices sold

These solutions contribute to the prestige of Polish engineering and strengthen the competitiveness of the economy.

Our technologies are used in the aviation, automotive and energy industries.

Education of future aircraft designers and engineers

The department conducts courses within Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes as well as the Doctoral School.

  • engineering thermodynamics
  • fluid mechanics
  • aerodynamics
  • aircraft propulsion
  • aircraft operation

Specialised training

  • design and operation of internal combustion engines
  • alternative fuel supply systems
