Department of Automotive Vehicles

Science and research activity

The scientific activity of the Department of Automotive Vehicles focuses on modern issues related to the design, operation and diagnostics of motor vehicles. Research conducted in the Department covers a broad spectrum of automotive engineering problems – from the analysis of powertrain systems and road traffic safety to advanced mechatronic systems used in modern vehicles.

Key research areas

  • analysis of the operation of vehicle powertrain systems under dynamic conditions
  • issues related to vehicle operation
  • research on unconventional fuels, including biofuels
  • road traffic safety and reconstruction of road accidents
  • modification of the surface layer of vehicle components
  • optimization of the design and control of hydromechanical transmissions
  • operation and diagnostics of vehicle electrical and electronic systems
  • analysis of the interaction between running gear systems and the road surface

Scope of experimental research

Research conducted in the Department includes both theoretical and experimental analyses using modern measurement methods. The most important research areas include:

  • in-cylinder pressure indication of internal combustion engines installed in vehicles
  • testing the properties and parameters of motor fuels
  • analysis of suspension and body geometry
  • evaluation of the tribological properties of vehicle components
  • analysis of the interaction between running gear systems and the road surface
  • testing the operation of controllers and mechatronic components
  • reading and analysis of data from electronic vehicle subsystems
  • analysis of accident data recorded in EDR (Event Data Recorder) modules

Expert analyses and road accident reconstruction

The Department prepares specialist expert reports in the field of automotive engineering, including, among others:

  • technical analyses of vehicles
  • reconstruction of road accidents
  • material and strength expert analyses
  • vehicle safety analyses

In 1998, the Road Accident Reconstruction Laboratory was established within the structure of the Department. Its main task is to prepare technical opinions and expert reports for the justice system in the field of road incident reconstruction.

Training courses and specialist courses

The Department provides training and specialist courses addressed to employees of the automotive sector, appraisers and technical experts.

  • reconstruction and analysis of road accidents
  • vehicle and engine repair technologies
  • diagnostics of control, safety and comfort systems
  • advanced measurement techniques in the automotive industry
  • in-cylinder pressure indication of internal combustion engines

Scientific cooperation

The Department of Automotive Vehicles actively cooperates with numerous scientific and research centres in Poland and abroad.

  • mechanical faculties of Polish universities of technology
  • institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences
  • scientific and industry associations
  • foreign universities

Thanks to this cooperation, the Department participates in research projects and develops modern technologies and research methods in the field of automotive engineering.
