History

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest faculty of Lublin University of Technology. Its origins trace back to the founding of the Evening School of Engineering in 1953, initially comprised of one faculty: Mechanical Engineering. The early years of the Faculty’s activity were marked by harsh conditions; it lacked its own premises, its own laboratory and its own research base.

Thanks to the resolution passed by the Presidium of the People’s Council in Lublin, the Evening School of Engineering was given a building in 13 Bernardyńska Street (the former Sobieski Family Palace), which became the school premises. Renovated and adapted for teaching purposes, the building hosted the inauguration of the School’s 10th year of teaching activity in 1962.

The Evening School of Engineering was transformed into the Higher School of Engineering by government order on April 28, 1965. The first entrance examinations for full-time undergraduate students at both the Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Faculties took place on July 2, 1965.

In 1968 the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering expanded their curriculum with a new specialization in motorized vehicle maintenance.

On October 11, 1973, the Ministry of Higher Education decided to restructure the school.  The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was transformed into the Institute of Technology and Machinery Maintenance.

In 1973 the Institute was the first faculty to offer full-time graduate studies. On October, 7, 1974, the Institute also began to offer supplementary M.Sc. studies for students of engineering.

In 1975 the Institute opened a new specialization in food industry machinery and equipment in the major of Mechanical Engineering. One year later, in 1976, the school began offering a major in Mining Engineering and Geology with a specialization in mining and drilling machinery and equipment.

In 1976, the Institute of Technology and Machinery Maintenance moved to a new location at 36 Nadbystrzycka Street, greatly improving its organization as well as scientific research and teaching conditions.

The Higher School of Engineering was transformed into Lublin University of Technology by government order on August 1, 1977.

In 1984 the University structure was again reorganized; the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Organization was established, incorporating the former Institute of Technology and Machinery Maintenance.
